Course Improvements

During each year, I had several versions of the syllabus for each course.  The first version was that syllabus that I inherited from former faculty members who taught the course previously.  The second version I developed before the course actually started.  This version was posted on D2L and discussed in class.  It was the basis for informing students about policies and procedures and expectations in my classes.  The third version included a revised course schedule, based on the adjustments necessary for field experience placements and other changes in the semester schedule as the semester proceeded .  The fourth version incorporated the revisions necessary for program reviews, such as the Board of Teaching or NCATE.

I continuously refine and improve my teaching methods and strategies.  These strategies are documented by course syllabi, CETL attendance records, projects and reports to the Minnesota Early Childhood Initiative facilitated through the Greater Mankato United Way, and course materials on Desire2Learn. Here are some examples of how I get feedback on my teaching and then make course improvements.

In 2009, I participated in a “cognitive coaching” session with Laura Bemel. (Notes).

In 2010, I invited a Student Consultant on Teaching (SCOT) from the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning to observe me teaching a class.  (Observation Notes).

In 2012, I was interested to find out how students regarded the possibilities of using electronic textbooks.  The Pearson folks assisted me with collecting anonymous student data. (Survey results)

In xxxx, after completing a POGIL workshop, I invited a peer to observe my teaching. (Observation Notes).

My research agenda has informed the re-design of EEC 222w so that students develop higher cultural competency. This powerpoint describes the changes that I made in the course between Fall 2011 and Spring 2012.

Applying the Quality Matters Rubric to online learning (certificate)

EEC 222w – Rubric for Service Learning Reflection Paper – 2013 – is here.

After participating in the 2013 – 2014 Valley Writing Workshop, I revised that rubric:

Here is an example of a student paper written after I made the changes in the rubric for the service learning paper.
