Alaska Christian College

Consultation for Faculty Development at Alaska Christian College, Soldotna, AK 2001 – present.

On March 24, 2013, I facilitated a  Workshop on Active Learning Strategies for Alaska Christian College. We discussed many strategies that foster teaching and learning among our students. Lois (Link) Solberg and Dale Solberg were two of the participants. They reported that (in this workshop) they learned
1. many ideas for active learning that will work in their teaching situations
2. how to use at least (and maybe only) one idea for each class meeting
3. how to use a “concept map” as a pre-instruction assessment and a post-assessment
4. selecting alternative possibilities beyond writing assignments to document student learning and achievement

They reported that they still want to learn how to be culturally-responsive without being “hokey” or false. Lois (Link) Solberg says she has often done things about 25 to 30 years later than the average person. She was 49 when she graduated from Northwestern College (NWC, Roseville, MN) through the FOCUS program with a degree in ministries—and a goal to teach in an academic setting. Another thing that Lois did “late” was marry. She and former NWC Director of Library Services Dale Solberg married when Lois was in her fifties. God called Dale and Lois to ministry at Alaska Christian College, a two-year Bible college that ministers to the needs of Native Alaskan youth. There, Dale is the Director of Learning Resources, and Lois serves as the Student Tracking Specialist. Of life in Alaska, Lois said it can be difficult to be so far away from all that is familiar, especially as family and friends age. But her life is rich in many unconventional ways … from filleting her own salmon on the beach under the midnight sun to gathering wildflower blossoms and berries for jelly. There’s always adventure! Her greatest lesson learned is that it’s still never too late! What a lesson to pass along to the ACC students.

From 2007 to 2013, I was a Member and Secretary, Board of Trustees, Alaska Christian College.
