2013 – 2014 Travel

July 14, 2013:  The Alaska Native Medical Center is a treasure, both for the Native patients and for visitors who enjoy seeing Native art. The Alaska Native Hospital has art at every turn in the hallway. The halls are lined with beautifully displayed and labeled works of Native art. Even the cafeteria has Alaskan-inspired cuisine. Sometimes visitors find salmon or reindeer meat at the hospital cafeteria! The gift shop is THE place to buy Alaska Native jewelry and art pieces. The shop purchases directly from artists and then adds only 20% to that for the selling price. The 20% is then returned to the hospital to purchase life-saving equipment and enhancements for patients. I found several children’s books that I can use as teaching resources in MSU classes.
