World Communion Sunday

(North Mankato, MN): Today was observed as World Communion Sunday at our church, Crossview Covenant Church. This day provided a distinctive opportunity to experience Holy Communion in the context of the global community of faith. The first Sunday of October has become a time when Christians in every culture break bread and pour the cup to remember and affirm Christ as the Head of the Church. On that day, we remember that we are part of the whole body of believers. Christians celebrate the communion liturgy in as many ways as there are congregations. World Communion Sunday was a profound worship experience and a time for learning more about our wider community of faith. At Crossview Covenant Church, we came forward to one of several “stations” at which congregational members were holding the bread and the cup (of juice, in our case). The server holding the bread murmured, “This is the body of Christ, broken for you.” The server holding the cup said, “This is the blood of Christ, shed for you.” On this day, several servers made their comments in English or Russian or Korean or Chinese or Spanish or Turkish. It was marvelously illustrative of the church around the world.
