Volunteers for the Mahkato Wacipi (PowWow)

(Mankato, MN): Looking for volunteers for the Annual Mahkato Wacipi

MSU students are eligible to complete all 18 hours of Service Learning required for EEC 222w if you work at the 2012 Mahkato Wacipi PowWow during the weekend of September 20 to 23. Shifts are filled quickly, so if you are interested in doing this service learning activity, please follow the directions below to contact Alice ASAP.

This Service Learning is organized by Project GEM (Alice DeYonge). She really depends on the Service Learning students to do meaningful work, but you are not expected to be an expert in anything before you get to the PowWow. There are scheduled shifts for Service Learning, with planned activities. Your weekend service-learning experience includes:
* Conversation with American Indian vendors
* Learn about traditional crafts
* Watch Grand Entry music and dancing
* Monitor the children’s playground area
* Serve and deliver meals to the elders
* Learn and help with traditional cooking
* Listen to Indian speakers talk about their culture and history

You must apply and request the shifts that you want to work. You must arrive on time. Here is a summary of the shifts:

Thursday 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM Raise several teepees
Friday 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM Assist with Education Day; Prepare native Fry Bread
Friday  11:30 PM – 2:30 PM Assist with Education Day; Plan playground activities
Friday  5:00 PM – 8:00 PM Observe Grand Entry
Saturday  11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Saturday  2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Saturday  5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Sunday  11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Sunday 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM

FYI: Shifts are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Shifts are filled quickly, so if you are interested in doing this service learning activity, please contact Alice ASAP. Do not sign up your friends. Alice will be updating these shifts weekly once they are filled.

To apply for the Service Learning hours that you prefer, send an email to gem7773@mchsi.com and copy the email to your MSU professor. Put in the subject heading: Powwow SL hours needed

6) The Day/Shift(s) you want (should total at least 18 hours)

8) Are you completing all your hours needed at this event?
9) Write 3 questions that you would ask to a Native American presenter at the PowWow.

You will receive an email from Alice to confirm your participation. Give her a few days to get back to you. Eventually, she will send you very complete information by email on or before September 17. Sign up with your email to Alice ASAP and keep track of your questions until then!

Note: If you are planning to do any service-learning hours for this event, you will need to have your own transportation. Please do this well in advance if you need to find a ride.
