Academic Journals – possibilities for publishing

(Mankato, MN):

Thomson Scientific (formerly ISI, Institute for Scientific Information) analyzes journal citation patterns to determine “Impact Factors” for thousands of journals. The impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in a journal has been cited in a particular year. These values are used to measure the importance of individual journals relative to other titles in their field. The annual Journal Citation Reports for Sciences and Social Sciences (JCR) compile these data into ranked lists of journals. The recognized authority for evaluating journals, JCR presents quantitative data that supports a systematic, objective review of the world’s leading journals. Using a combination of impact and influence metrics, and millions of cited and citing journal data points that comprise the complete journal citation network of Web of Science, JCR provides the context to understand a journal’s true place in the world of scholarly literature. With the JCR, authors and editors can identify the most appropriate, influential journals in which to publish. An impact factor (IF) above 2.0 seems to be quite high.

In researching academic journals that would be appropriate for my research articles, I developed this list:

  1. International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
  2. Educational Researcher (IF 2.931)
  3. American Educational Research Journal (IF 2.393; 8 of 206 in Education and Educational Research)
  4. Journal of Teacher Education (IF 2.292; 10 of 206 in Education and Educational Research)
  5. American Journal of Evaluation (IF 2.022)
  6. Journal of Teaching and Teacher Education (IF 1.675)
  7. Journal of Studies in Higher Education (IF 1.061)
