Advising Procedures

Dropping vs. Withdrawing from Courses

Dropping: Students must drop by the end of the first week of the semester using the on-line registration system. Dropped courses do not permanently impact students’ records and do not count against their completion rate.

Withdrawing: A withdrawal means that the student plans to withdraw from an individual course and receive a W a grade. Students may withdraw from individual or all classes any time before the deadline (Please see Registrar’s Website for deadline) Withdrawal from any or all classes WILL impact students’ completion rate, and financial aid. If students are withdrawing from all classes, this could also impact their campus housing situation. NOTE: Feel free to refer a student to our office for assistance with dropping/withdrawing from a course

Incomplete vs. In Progress Grades

Incomplete Grades (“I”) The grade of incomplete or “I” is reserved for special cases and that, because of extenuating circumstances, the student failed to meet a specific need and an important requirement of the course, but has in other respects done passing work for the semester. The incomplete must be made up by the student during the next term in which they are enrolled, and if it is not made up in that time, the grade will then turn to an F. Students making up incompletes should not re-register for the class. Instead, students work with the faculty member on an individual basis to complete the missing work. When an incomplete is made up, the instructor reports the completed grade to the Office of the Registrar using a Grade Change form.

In Progress Grades (IP) The grade of in progress or “IP” is reserved for special cases and means that the particular course is not designed to be completed by the end of the term. An in progress grade must be made up by the student during the next year in which they are enrolled, and students making up in progress grades should not re-register for the class. When an in progress grade is made up, the instructor reports the completed grade to the Office of the Registrar using a Grade Change form. When in progress grades are not made up within the specified time, they automatically become either “F”.
